Running a PC operating system is somewhat unusual on a Macintosh but is often needed. Macs do not deal with .exe and .com file extensions and for good reason. They are the ones that most often carry the virus which plagues the windows industry. Virtual PC for Mac with Win 2000 is good if you desire a network setup due to its compatability with Win NT 4.0.
This version (5) will run on both OS 9 and OS X but remember that it requires alot of RAM and still runs sluggish when compared to the Mac. If you have to be in the PC spectrum but want the ease of owning a Macintosh, then this is a good choice.
Ease of installation is a standout here, with a simple and graphical installation wizard. (The featured Mandrake distribution has scored points with the Linux community for ease of configuration and its compatibility with Red Hat.) For those users who want to run Windows and Linux together, a version of PowerQuest's PartitionMagic allows you to create a Linux partition. (You'll need to upgrade to the full version of PartitionMagic to install onto Windows NT NTFS partitions, however.)
The version of Linux with this package is the K Desktop Environment (KDE)--an attractive desktop manager--with an option to use GNOME (and other desktops). KDE, with its slick, intuitive look and feel, is arguably a good choice for the Windows user tackling Linux for the first time. This package features a number of utilities for text and image editing.
A standout feature here are the five electronic books included on a CD-ROM of "extras." These titles include three well-known texts on Linux, KDE 1.1, and GIMP from SAMS "Teach Yourself in 24 Hours" series. RedHat Linux Unleashed and Que's Using Linux Special Edition round out the available information. Armed with these electronic titles, which add up to some 3,500 pages of information, any newbie can master the ins and outs of the Linux OS.
In all, this package is a good choice for anyone who wants to run Linux on a Pentium-class system. Expert users of Linux who want to tweak every setting probably won't appreciate the ease of installation offered here, but many potential users will, making this product a good choice for getting up and running with a powerful version of today's Linux. --Richard Dragan
This set stood up to my expectations almost perfectly: it is very clearly expressed work. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. Simply awesome. Easy to follow, good instructions, just right for me. If you're not yet familiar with UNIX, make sure to work your way through one of the better introductions to UNIX. Assuming you know what a mouse is and have some computer saavy, you should be able to learn Linux from this reasonably easily.
I procured my copy of ubuntu directly from canonical about 2 months ago, after a few weeks of messing around with it I decided to wait for the lts release. the program itself is awesome, its efficient aesthetically pleasing and most certainly superior to windows. Unfortunately 7.10 is notorious for having issues with propreitary hardware from HP Pavillion laptops. I fought with my broadcom drivers for about 2 weeks trying to get them to work. and the nvidia. In the end I was still having issues with various files and hardware. 8.04 was just released thursday and it is phenominal. i had no problems logging on, I didn't have to enter exceptions to the logon script and i didn't have issue with the graphics or sound. But most importaintly I didn't have nearly as much trouble with the hardware in my computer.
The best thing about Ubuntu is that you have a dedicated group of people on [...] that walk you through any issues you have with the system. I truly do look forward to joining to assist as soon as I can get a hang of the system, they have been truly helpful everytime i've had an issue.
Canonical states that they want to bring the Ubuntu philosophy of goodwill to others to the software world. They have succeeded admirably with this operating system. And as for Mr. Jobs and Mr. Gates, keep an eye out because Ubuntu is superior to both mac os and windows by leaps and bounds and is free as opposed to 200.00 a release.
I am very computer literate, however I had no clue on how to use Linux. Linux may well be the successor to Windows. Its design, based on Linux (a multi-user, multi-task operating system), was from its start multi-tasking and multi-user. And I decided it was time to become much more Linuxsavvy. Now I'm surfing around dizzying hierarchies of file structures, able to get to the root and back again and make and edit text files. I've become a bigger and bigger fan of Kubuntu and Linux. This set is superlative.
I've only had ViaVoice for about one week now, but I have a pretty good impression of it. At first, what I was using it, I thought that it wasn't doing very well. It was making a large number of mistakes, and I was spending a lot of time correcting them. However, IBM seems to have done a good job, since I find that I'm correcting the program less, even after just one week. I probably use it for about one hour a day. The interface is actually very good, and mostly shows that they did try to write a Mac program. What finally convinced me that this program was great, is a test that I did earlier tonight. I read several paragraphs, and then figured out just how fast I was dictating to the software. It turns out, that I've been dictating at 150 words per minute.
However, there are a couple things wrong with the program. At least a couple times a day when using it, SpeakPad just stops responding. And I have to save my work, and restart the program. Not deadly by any means, but rather annoying. I also find that the in line correction that ViaVoice uses can often screw up. Sometimes when I'm correcting it will start inserting text randomly or cutting out text randomly and I can't figure out a pattern, and it's obviously a bug. However, for the most part it works. I have a repetitive stress injury in my wrists, and even though I'm spending time correcting, I still think that I'm probably getting at least 70 words per minute, which is about how fast I can type. The speed of ViaVoice is not an issue, at least on my Cube. It's plenty fast enough to keep up with my dictation.
And just for your information, I dictated this review using ViaVoice, and there were six mistakes (that I noticed). =)

I am currently working on a presentation for the International Graphic Arts Education Association and will be featuring your product in my presentation. As more and more teachers in my building see what I'm capable of doing with your tool, I have no doubt that they too will be ordering your product quickly just like I recently did. I'm also helping one of my students develop an introductory level class on CD and it's been a great learning experience for both of us. Easily can use this software as a screen saver, automated slide show, wallpaper, and even as an "image puzzle", just by following the simple, clear Installation instructions. The simplicity and ease of setup of the software, certainly made this a good purchase for the money.
I have been a Windows user since version 3.1
That all changed when I finally got tired of:
1) Error messages that would come up for no apparent reason and with no practical solution
2) Rebooting for every little upgrade
3) Getting constant pop-up reminders and reboots behind my back
4) The Windows way of doing things
5) Lack of innovation
I've been using Kubuntu 7.10 ever since I've installed it and so far, I'm loving it.
However, making a leap from Windows to Kubuntu is alot like changing religions. You need lots of faith. Your parents and friends are going to be like, "Why would you do THAT?"
Well here's why it's worth making this daring leap of faith:
1) Linux operating systems and software are often free (money-wise) and free to tinker with and modify.
2) Kubuntu has a nice desktop that is not too different from a Windows desktop.
3) Most Windows files will run in Kubuntu (Excel, Word, MP3, WMA, Mozilla, etc.)
4) And finally, CUSTOMIZATION. Instead of one boring desktop, you can install Compiz Fusion and get a cube desktop or E17 for a more practical one. There are more, but those are the two I prefer.
And all those complaints I had about Windows, are practically nonexistent in Kubuntu. I don't have to reboot. I seldom get error messages. And I can customize my computer to my heart's content.
I do have a few recommendations though before you switch:
1) Run Kubuntu off a Live CD first (to try it out and see if you even like that distribution)
2) Make sure you have internet access during your install (the ubuntu forums are extremely helpful unlike calling "Professional" tech support and getting some guy from India.
3) Be patient. I'll admit that Linux takes a while to set up, but once you get things working, you'll love it!
Windows NT Server is a highly scalable, reliable and available operating system that meets the requirements of the overwhelming majority of the enterprise and medium size business-computing needs for data management, messaging, transaction processing, Internet services, and file and print infrastructure. Supported by a significant majority of the world's systems providers, Windows NT Server also offers customers (if you're the firm installing the system) with an integrated, multipurpose and cost-effective operating system.
One can argue that Windows 2000 Server would be more cost effective but only if you're starting a system out from scratch. It has been the experience of many pre-existing NT based firms that the real cost effectiveness lies in productivity. Productivity that is based on a stable operating system and clients.
I am pleased with tho software. It arrived promptly, I have installed it, run it daily, and I am a happy customer.

This is a clear, concise guide for nonprofessionals, non-geeks, for the most user friendly distribution of Linux. Good start for beginners on Slackware Linux which is the easiest Linux OS I know off. Prepares you throughout installation and setting up, with helpful tidbits and references. If your not slavishly attached to Windows, you might be greatly pleased by what the Linux experience has to offer. Honestly, I use it as a reference for my UNIX needs.
I have a Dell laptop on which I've installed Gentoo. I decided to delve into building a server and purchased this package believing I would find much more information than I did. And now I would suggest that any one interested in using the linux operating system. You should start with this package. It contains the system DVDs, so, it is a complete item. Just wanted something that would have information/installation all in one place. Best of luck, and I think you will love it.
BeOS is one of those products that is superior in so many ways that you just have to hope that it hangs on and eventually becomes mainstream. In this time of hype and excitement over Linux, BeOS has been somewhat glossed over, probably because it doesn't subscribe to the 'Open Source' movement currently in vogue. This is too bad, for BeOS really is a gem.
Installation is better than any other operating system I've ever had experience with, it asks only a few questions of you and everything just works right out of the box. Simplicity is the name of the game for BeOS, many of the founders were once Mac guys and it shows in the look and feel of the interface. BeOS isn't just fluff though, it's reliable and speedy as well, and combined with the simple interface makes it a real joy to use.
Like all alternative operating system BeOS has one major flaw however, and that's the lack of applications. Particularly in the browser area, BeOS does not yet offer something comparable to Netscape 4.6 on Linux or IE 5.0 on Windows, sure, there is Opera, but it is unreliable and doesn't always work. Web browsers really are the killer app these days, and it's unfortunate that BeOS can't compete in that area yet, but maybe Mozilla will give it a second life. Also the community around BeOS seems to be focused around 'shareware' instead of the open source model. Although I won't argue to the strenths and merrits of either, the latter seems to encourage more development, so many more applications are available on Linux than BeOS. That said, those which ARE available on BeOS are well polished (mostly due to the consistency of the interface that BeOS presents the user) and do their job well.
I wouldn't recommend BeOS to anybody, but I think it would work well for many. For example, I think my mother would be perfectly happy working on a BeOS box, and would appreciate the simplicity, reliability and speed that it offers, never missing some of the software it misses. (except for the lacking web browser) If you're tied to Photoshop or Word or other software not available, you're obviously tied, but I still recommend picking up a copy (5.0 is available for download free) and giving it a try, I guarantee you won't be disapointed.
Be delivers on its promise of providing high-end or dedicated multimedia hardware for audio or video editing at a consumer-level price. Another considerable plus: Be actually installs in the time the manufacturer says it will (15 minutes). A system that can coexist with Linux, Mac, and Windows, it can also be your primary system if you want to create a dedicated "BeBox."
Be can run QuickTime and MPEGs, has accessible Mediaplayer and Webcam applications, and contains its own Web browser, NetPositive. The OS supports Universal Serial Bus (USB) and Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. As with other alternative operating systems, new free and shareware applications are constantly in development. I know only enough about computers to do everyday tasks in Windows and surf the Web. I wanted to develop a foundation of knowledge for discussions with my friend, who is very knowledgeable about Linux and uses it at work and at home. I needed something that would tell me very quickly what I needed to know to make use of a UNIX, and more importantly, to have some idea what I was looking at when I saw Linux-related commands on a screen. And fortunately for me, the Linux desktop has evolved to the place where you can use it much like a Windows environment. But like earlier versions of Windows, there is a lot of power if you delve under the graphic layer of the operating system. This set helped put some ground under my feet.

Windows 98 Second Edition
The "Getting Started" manual has a `Contents' for its six chapters, a `Glossary', and an `Index' of eight pages. `Appendix A' explains how to use a mouse. `Appendix B' is "Accessibility for People with Disabilities", page 103 lists the problems (no mention of color blindness). "General Windows Keys" are on pages 108 to 112. The `Preface' tells how to use this manual. Chapter 1 teaches about Windows 98 in its 21 pages. Chapter 2 is titled "Installing Windows 98". Certain optional features require a 14.4 modem, a sound card and speakers, a DVD-ROM drive and decoder, and a compatible TV tuner card (p.24). Upgrading is explained (pp.25-26). Chapter 3 explains "Using Your Desktop". It is similar to Windows 95 with enhancements (support for USB ports used by most printers).
Chapter 4 tells how to customize your desktop, the display on your monitor. The "Active Desktop" can display Web pages (p.56). You can watch TV on your computer (p.62). You can use multiple monitors (p.66). Chapter 5 explains "Using the Internet". Chapter 6 has many technical topics "Advanced Issues". The FAT32 file system is more efficient in using disk space (p.80), supports a large hard drive, and is more reliable. The many topics here can inform you about options available for a computer used by other people ("Home Networking"). Windows 98 SE can be used on a 486 or equivalent (like a 586 or 686). Later versions of Windows require a faster Pentium. This system does not support USB Mass Storage devices (memory sticks or some USB devices).
There are Unofficial software drivers to update Windows 98 SE to support USB Mass Storage devices. The site address is: www.technical-assistance.co.uk/drivers/nusb33e.exe. Download the NUSB33E.exe file to your computer. Go to Device Manager and remove ALL drivers for USB flash drives or any USB 2.0 controllers (many have an uninstall option) . Remove ALL unknown devices from Device Manager. Run the downloaded file, and follow the instructions, rebooting after installation. When the computer boots up again, it may detect new USB 2.0 controllers, in which case you may need to reboot again.

This package contains more than just one piece of software, but actually a suite of products that are intuitive and easy to use. There is also (believe it or not) a printed manual ... and it has been written for mere mortals, not just geeks!
The stuffit expander can be downloaded for free, but what if you need to stuff some files (like a bunch of photos you want to send to Grandma via e-mail) to send over the Internet? This is the software you need. It will mount and create disk images, create archives and you can also include password protection on your archives. Windows users can also "unstuff" files sent to them that are stuffed w/ Stuffit Deluxe as the Windows version of the expander software is also free and can be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. The manufacturer has been faithful in updating this software over the years and Stuffit is here to stay. I've been using this software for nearly 10 years, and it just keeps getting better. It will open a lot of mysteriously archived files including .cap, .bin and .zip without error. Works in tandem with web browsers or as a stand-alone.

It is stable, does not cause any compatibility issues and just works well. It's format, function and lesson planning is ideal for most entry level and intermediate users.
